Wild Canyons

In my home textile collection, “Wild Canyons,” I was inspired by the Wild West and the culture of Navajo Native Americans. In Navajo weaving, there are many jagged geometric shapes, so I wanted to incorporate this theme by creating my own shapes. In the Navajo Nation, there are about 40,000 wild horses, so this is seen as a symbol of their tribe. In their culture, horses are seen as a symbol of strength and unconquerable spirits. Sadly, there are many factors threatening these wild horses including farming, horse taming, and herd roundups for population control. Along with the leaders in the Navajo Nation, I wanted to bring awareness to this issue by creating a woven textile collection that tells a story to consumers. I want my collection to invoke feelings of the free spirit, while also warming the home with its vibrant colors. My target customer is someone who likes a Western accent, bold colors, and a story to display in their home.
